The Story Behind This Piece:

This drawing depicts a very special instrument that introduced another layer to my identity as a creative. The cello, a tender yet powerful instrument that transcends the bounds of the string orchestra, profoundly shaped the development of my second love outside of art. Although I officially began my music journey at age 10 by playing the viola, I had a true awakening a few years later when I intently listened to the cello section play individually during my middle school orchestra class. Then there it was on Christmas Day of 2014: my very first and very own cello at age 12, clad in ivory white with jet-black wooden tuning pegs. From then to now, in my early 20s, I taught myself to play by both watching others play and making specific connections to my viola experience, and I even got the opportunity to perform as a cellist in an ensemble for the very first time in college (2020-2024). I sought to capture the unique shape of the top of the instrument, which is referred to as the scroll. I opted to use a graphite pencil for this piece to communicate the intricacy and visual depth of the structure.
